Hematopoietic stem cell donor registries & Search units

Search units in our Frankfurt and Ulm HLA laboratories work closely together with pediatricians and hematologists at the transplant units of the university hospitals in order to find a suitable HLA-matched hematopoietic stem cell donor for their patients.

Located in Ulm/Donau in our institute, the German National Stem Cell Donor Registry ZKRD (Zentrales Knochenmarkspender-Register of Germany; www.zkrd.de), a 100 % affiliate to our holding company, organises the cooperation of all regional German donor registries, comprising more than three million of HLA-typed German donors, and the connection to the worldwide registries in order to procure a suitable HLA-matched hematopoietic stem cell transplant for a patient.

Our apheresis and cellular therapy departments not only provide platelet concentrates, fresh frozen plasma and granulocyte concentrates, but also procure more than 1,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplants per year from related (family) and unrelated HLA-matched donors as well as donor lymphocytes for donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). Dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells and mesenchymal stem cells are novel cell populations provided for clinical studies only in close cooperation with different study groups.

From the hematopoietic stem cell donors registered in the bone marrow donor registries in Frankfurt, Mannheim and Ulm, we procured 622 hematopoietic stem cell transplants from 2001 to 2007 (see figure below!)
